Music Crosses Borders to Make Poverty History at the Junos & with U2

Music, often considered the international language, was also given an international message this past month with the help of EWB.   On and off the red carpet of the Juno awards and at both U2 concerts in Vancouver, EWB volunteers were asking music fans to help Make Poverty History.

EWB Day: A Smashing Success

On March 3 rd , for the third annual EWB Day, more than 500 chapter volunteers were on street corners, in malls, at libraries and on campuses raising awareness within their communities about global poverty and development.   Expressing the urgency of closing the gap between the world's most wealthy and impoverished, EWB volunteers challenged Canadians to Make Poverty History.

Conference 2005: Connecting Actions to Impact

"The amount of energy was amazing", "the speakers were very dynamic and knowledgeable", and workshops allowed for "questions and debate" - just some of the feedback from the almost 300 participants in attendance at the EWB National Conference in Vancouver this past January.

Raising Awareness, Engagement & Funds: 22 Chapters Wrap-up Another Year

As another academic year wraps up, so too are the activities of the 22 EWB chapters across Canada.   The year was one of exceptional chapter success - the incorporation of international development curriculum into three engineering more programs, development education in 280 secondary school classrooms and reaching 7,500 students, member education totaling over 10,000 hours, public outreach engaging well over 20,000 Canadians, and fundraising efforts reaching $250,000.

For eight months Katy Galvin has been working overseas on placement with EWB, but the experience of living and working in Ghana continues to be full of surprises and challenges and is proving for this UBC grad to be a continuous learning process.
