Preparing our largest group of volunteers to go overseas

For 35 university students from across the country, a year of grueling development education exercises and "out in the street in -40degC" fundraising events paid off in Toronto earlier this month. These students, active leaders of EWB Chapters across Canada, came together for an intense week of training in preparation for their four-month volunteer placements overseas.

The impact of cultural integration: A letter from Sarah Grant in the Philippines

I have done everything possible to integrate into the Filipino culture. I am living in a one room flat, I have just enough money each day to travel to work and eat three healthy meals. Every evening I enjoy listening to Filipino radio and eating rice with my hands. My Tagalog (the language spoken by most Filipinos) has improved dramatically and I am able to converse with people on a very basic level. I own a Nokia cell phone and download the latest ring tones.

EWB volunteers blaze a trail towards development

With creative minds and unwavering dedication, Samina Hashmi and Chad Hamre have inspired their EWB Chapters and communities to care about and commit to development, blazing a trail for Canadians to make a difference in the developing world. This month, both Samina and Chad received prestigious awards for their outstanding leadership and exceptional dedication to social change.

EWB: Trend setters at the Sarah McLachlan concert

Canadian music lovers can't help but notice the latest trend among musicians. Worn by K-Os at the Junos, Bono at his concerts in Vancouver last month and Sara McLachlan at her May 17th Toronto show, the white wrist band, signature of the Make Poverty History campaign, is showing up on stages across the country - and always with some help from EWB.

EWB welcomes new staff

If you drop by the EWB national office this spring you will probably notice some new faces. With the addition of Brenna Donoghue, Laura McGrath and Chad Hamre to the management team, and three summer students, Danya Nadar, Francis Kung and Tanya Neumeyer, the office is getting a bit more crowded.

Alumni profile: From EWB to Oxford

It was back in March of 2001, just a few months after she founded the McGill Chapter of EWB, that Alex Conliffe decided to bid on hosting the first-ever EWB National Conference. With just a handful of volunteers and no experience in running conferences in the past, she certainly had high aspirations. McGill won the bid, and after running a highly successful conference a year later, Alex had helped transform the organization from a virtual network of interested students, to a group of emerging young leaders who were dedicated to making a difference in the world.
