Making Poverty History on campuses across Canada

EWB chapters took their campuses by storm during this year’s frosh week. The first week back at school, traditionally dominated by parties, was about much more this year as EWB members challenged the incoming class to make a serious commitment to Make Poverty History.

Lessons learned while overseas: 35 volunteers wrap-up a summer abroad

Last month, 35 EWB volunteers returned to Canada after four months working and living in developing communities in Africa and Asia. Each of their experiences were unique, shaped by the people they met, the projects on which they worked and the communities in which they lived. But what they shared upon returning to Canada were many of the same lessons learned – lessons that will last far longer than their four months overseas.

The 2006 National Conference is fast approaching

Canada’s largest annual international development conference is fast approaching. From January 18-22, EWB will hold its fifth annual National Conference, hosted by the Carleton University chapter in Ottawa. In celebration of the fifth anniversary, delegates will focus on ‘Looking Back and Moving Forward’ as an organization.

EWB is pleased to announce that General Roméo Dellaire will deliver the keynote address at the Conference Gala Banquet which will be held at the Canadian War Museum on January 21. The event will be open to both conference delegates, distinguished guests and interested members of the public.

Registration for all conference delegates will begin next month.

Back to the books: Where will development fit in?

Thousands of engineering students across Canada headed back to the books this month - and for some, their courses are looking a little different. In partnership with EWB, five engineering programs have now incorporated sustainable development topics into their curriculum, showing future engineers that they can make important contributions to international development.

EWB Alumni: From Water to Wind

Almost three years ago, with only a few days under her belt in Cameroon, Mary Roach joked that she could now add “Latrine Building Expert” to her resumé - “won’t that be a drawing card!” But she’s now learning that perhaps it was. And although her work on a hygiene education project seems like a world away from her current position at General Electric, the experience gained while in Cameroon provided her with the knowledge, skills and dynamism that are propelling her career forward.
