Summer 2004

Without Borders but With Awards!

"Did Engineers Without Borders Canada really begin as an idea on the back of napkin in a coffee shop?" It's a standard question for EWB's founders. Multifunctional Platform Helps to Address Rural Energy Needs in Northern Ghana

What were you doing last year in the five days leading up to Christmas? Madly shopping for last minute Christmas gifts? EWB volunteer Mike Quinn (Vancouver, British Columbia) was madly shopping too … but his shopping took him on an 6 hour mini-bus ride from Yaakrom to Kumasi, in Ghana, to replace a broken part for the Multifunctional Platform (MFP), and then back to Yaakrom to complete the installation.

Mike knew how important the successful installation of the MFP was — currently over 80% of rural Ghanaians lack access to electricity. This hinders economic activity and stunts the enterprise development that is so critical to improving the quality of life in rural Ghana.

Integrating with Communities allows EWB's 40 Overseas Volunteers to have Impact

Paul Slomp's (Edmonton, Alberta) supervisor in Ghana was amazed to find that in just three weeks Paul had learned more of the local language, Ga, than he had learned in three years. Cynthia Ene (Montreal, Quebec) tries to live on $3 per day while volunteering in Ghana because she wants to better understand how Ghanaians live. From Asia to Africa, EWB volunteers are rapidly integrating with their partner organizations and communities by learning and incorporating local languages and customs into their daily lives. This summer, 40 EWB volunteers like Paul and Cynthia are building trust and relationships within their communities and it is helping them have real impact.
