External Awards

The Rhodes Scholarship

Alex Conliffe and Arani Kajenthira, two exceptional leaders in EWB, were awarded this highly prestigious and competitive award for their commitments to others in 2005 and 2004 respectively.

Canadian Council of Professional Engineers Student Gold Medal

For six concecutive years, EWB members have received this award given to strong Canadian engineering students who excel as leaders and make important contributions in their community: Alejandro Gomez-Julia (2007), Nicholas Clermont (2006), Chad Hamre (2005), Andrea Lee (2004), Ali-Ismail Shivji (2003) and Sara Ehrhardt (2002).

Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women

Samina Hashmi, EWB’s Director Chapter Development, was awarded Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women Award in the Future Leader category in 2006. Co-founders of EWB's professional chapter in Calgary, Lindsay Mitchell and Emily Zhang received the same award in 2008.

YWCA Young Trail Builders Award

In Ottawa and in Vancouver, the YWCA has recognized Samina Hashmi and Monika Rucki respectively as young female leaders who have demonstrated a desire to affect change and improve the lives of others. Both have been extremely involved in EWB as chapter leaders, overseas volunteers and National Conference co-chairs.

The Helen McCrae Award

Awarded by the University, the UBC EWB Chapter won the award for enhancing the student experience and learning environment at UBC.

Leaders for the Future Award, Ontario Professional Engineers Foundation for Education

Janna Hamilton, a leader of EWB’s Guelph University Chapter and a Junior Fellow working in Ghana, was awarded the Ontario Professional Engineers Foundation for Education Leaders for the Future Award. Janna was selected for her working promoting engineering among students and enhancing the public’s knowledge of international development.

Internal Awards

The 2006 EWB Volunteers of the Year were recognized for their exceptional commitment to human development and their impact on EWB:

  • Danny Howard

The 2006 Chapter of the Year was the University of British Columbia Chapter. In addition, two awards for chapters who demonstrated exceptional growth were given to the University of Toronto and University of New Brunswick Chapters.
