Tapping into our skills: Answering the call for a new type of leader
Pipeline Magazine, a publication put out by the Ontario Water Works Association, recently published this article written by EWBers Jane Simmons and Olivia McGuire. The article takes evidence from EWB's work in Malawi and applies it to Ontario's water services. Take a look at the excerpt below, and follow the link to see the full article.
“If the tap in your kitchen breaks, you’d probably fix it. IF the water main on your street breaks, what would it take to get you and all your neighbours out on the street, chipping in money, buying spare parts, and fixing the problem? I’d be willing to bed just about anything it wouldn’t happen. But you’d all fix your kitchen tap.”
Owen Scott, African Program Staff, Malawi.
Water will cost more for Ontarians - dramatically more. Ontario Regulation 453/07 means that users will pay the full cost of their drinking water supply. Many municipalities have water systems that are aging and, in some cases, beyond their usual life. Years of building infrastructure with deferred maintenance means aging systems with significant rehabilitation costs.
