Water in the Developing World

How many times today have you used water? Perhaps in the shower, to wash dishes or to guzzle down. Imagine that every drop that you and your family used came from a well 2 kilometers away, was not very clean and that you had to carry every drop of it back to your home.

For millions of people your age, this is a daily reality.

More than one billion people in the world lack access to safe drinking water. Many communities in the developing world must to rely on unsafe water taken from polluted streams and rivers, or unprotected springs and wells.

Millions of women and children must walk several kilometers each day to reach even these unsafe sources because they have no alternative. They carry all the water they and their families need for drinking, cooking, cleaning and bathing. The water they carry can weigh up to 20 kilograms.

Without access to safe water, it becomes nearly impossible for people in the world's poorest communities to escape the downward spiral of poverty and disease.

But it doesn't need to be this way—you can help!
