Christian Beaudrie in Ghana
Akwaaba! My name is Christian Beaudrie, and I am currently volunteering with EWB in Tamale, Ghana, with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA). I am very excited to have this opportunity to build capacity within MoFA, where here in Ghana’s Northern Region the long dry season is a continual challenge for rural communities, most notably farmers. Through a participatory approach with MoFA staff and district farmers, I hope to help MoFA in their effort to promote appropriate and sustainable farming practices that can bolster food security in the region.
After two years as an environmental engineering assistant with the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, I returned to Canada to pursue a Master’s in Biomedical Engineering at McGill University. I immediately became involved in the EWB Chapter at McGill, where I first worked as Director of High School Outreach, and continued on the following year as Chapter President.
Through this experience I realized the tremendous impact that average Canadians can have both in Canada and abroad. Moreover, this experience has opened my eyes to the ravaging effects of poverty worldwide, and has inspired me to become actively involved in promoting human development.
I am now following in the footsteps of many passionate EWB volunteers, in hopes of having a positive impact at MoFA. I am confident that EWB’s work with MoFA can help the people of Northern Ghana to overcome the grip of poverty. The challenge is exciting, as I know that I will be forever changed by it. I now look forward to fostering positive changes in MoFA’s capacity that will lead to improved livelihoods for impoverished families all over Ghana.
