Josephine Tsui in Zambia

Wabonwa! My name is Josephine from the University of Calgary. I was previously involved in EWB for three years through the Chapter at the U of C.

After graduating, I traveled the globe and eventually worked for the Calgary Workers’ Resource Centre. In the summer of 2006 I decided to leave Calgary for Zambia, where I am currently an EWB overseas volunteer.

I am working in Livingstone, southern Zambia, helping to build Sorghum Cooperatives and expand the market for the crop here in Zambia. Throughout Zambia, people eat maize (corn) as their staple. The problem with maize however, is that it requires a great deal of rainfall – something that Zambia does not often receive. Sorghum on the other hand, requires very little rain, and is a more robust alternative.

Through this project, I hope to help farmers secure their livelihood and improve their food security.
