Trina Wushke in Malawi

My name is Trina Wushke. I graduated from the Development Studies program at the University of Calgary in 2003. Nope… not engineering.

So what am I doing with EWB you ask?

I first became connected with EWB through my work with Canadian Red Cross. I was an educator on the issue of land mines and EWB was involved. Since then I moved on to work as the International Direction at the YMCA - educating children, youth and members about international issues.

I am now in Malawi as an EWB long-term volunteer, working in partnership with an organisation called Total Land Care (TLC). Their work revolves around 1) Rural Energy, 2) Water and Sanitation and 3) Irrigation. One of the major projects that TLC works on revolves the introduction of the treadle pump. The treadle pump is an effective human powered tool for irrigation. Its use in parts of Zambia has produced a six fold increase in crop yields in some instances. I hope to see the same kind of positive impact for the farmers here in Malawi.
