EWB National Conference 2010: St. John’s here we come!

4 January, 2010 @ 14:40

In just two days, over 400 EWBers will be flooding into St. John’s, Newfoundland for the 2010 EWB National Conference.

The conference is EWB’s yearly opportunity to bring together our chapter members, overseas volunteers, staff, and other supporters for four energizing days. This year we are headed to St. John’s to share our experiences as EWBers and work to improve the organization in the coming year. What a way to start off 2010!

EWB’s conference has been generating buzz in Newfoundland - not altogether surprising since it will be the biggest international development conference in Canada this year. The Western Star recently profiled EWB Chapter Co-President Laura Payne.

“Corner Brook native Laura Payne, a fourth-year chemical engineering student at Dalhousie University, is leading the way in ensuring high school students in her home province are engaged when the massive outreach event. We are headed out to 11 high schools in St. John’s to deliver classroom presentations on EWB’s work and impact.

Laura, like so many other EWBers, will be helping high school students to better understand their role as global citizens through the event. This year is expected to be better than ever, with an impressive 4,000 high school students taking part through the massive outreach event.

“They will leave these sessions energized and equipped with tools to start taking actions as global citizens,” says Laura in the article. “The main idea is to create a global mindset that, it is not just you in the world, that you are connected to every single person. You can affect somebody, whether it is in your own town or somebody in Sub-Saharan Africa.”

The 2010 National Conference is shaping up to be an exciting opportunity for both EWB’s members and Newfoundlanders to connect with the changes we are creating both overseas and at home. Stay tuned for exciting updates from hundreds of EWBers as we take St. John’s by storm!
