For Ben Best, one of our newer volunteers in Ghana, this has meant recognizing his host father Dery Torwel. Dery is a maize farmer, a community leader, and works hard to improve his life, and the life of his children.

This year Dery was one of only three farmers in his rural community to try a new farming project that would more than double his crop yields. His intention was to learn new farming methods, which would improve the income he could earn from his maize fields in the long-run.

Despite the fact that the new project might increase his costs, Dery did not shy away from the opportunity to realize success – to help his family lead a more prosperous life.

And it is his family that Dery cares about above all else.

After seeing that his son was not receiving a quality education, Dery sent him to live with his uncle to attend a better school, which meant they could no longer help manage the family farm. Now, Dery works extra hard – like pursuing the new farming project – to ensure his son can live any life he wants.

This Sunday June 20th, wish all the forward-thinking and entrepreneurial fathers like Dery a very Happy Father’s Day.
